A day trip into the mountains for a visit to "Earthquake Lake"
Up early this morning for a day trip with former students of Yi-Jiun's mom. The first stop was Earthquake Lake...more on this later.
We met up at the Dong Shan Rest Area, home to the nicest Men's Room in all of Taiwan (a title awarded by me and worthy of a photo).
Getting to the lake requires a transfer to a shared vehicle for a drive up a steep & winding road. The closest thing we've experienced to 4 Wheeling in Taiwan
The steep hills are terraced with high mountain tea. Very reminiscent Inca Terraces in Peru.
The trail to the lake was muddy. The lake was formed as a result of the 7.3 earthquake that struck on 21 Sept 1999 killing more than 2400. This was just before my first visit to Taiwan.
Walking around the lake.
Some of the members of the group with birthdays in October...the carried the cake to the lake!
Back down & scrubbing mud from our shoes.
Terraced Tea Plants in the fog.
Nice & cool temps in the mountains, a great time for Hot Pots. Yi-Jiun had spicy schezwan, mine was pumpkin.
After lunch, we stopped at the Xitou Monster Village
When KFC is not available...KEC will have to do
Walking around Monster Village
Spotted one...there's a monster
Of course, more snacks...Grass Cakes --- salty & red bean
We were still stuffed from lunch when we learned the group was stopping at 35 Earthen Jar Chicken for dinner. Welcome to 35. Maybe they'll just make it a small order since everyone is full.
So much for a small meal!
